Slavery is now illegal,internationally and in Nigeria, however, legality is often overlooked with different pre-existing cultural traditions which view certain actions differently.
in Nigeria, certain tradition and religious practices have led to the inevitable overload between cultural,traditional and legislation in many African states control over many lives resulting in modern day slavery. The most common forms of modern slavery in Nigeria are human trafficking and child labor.
Although local slavery was official prohibited by the colonial British Administration from the MID-1880s, they tacitly permitted it to continue well into the 1930s, ending completely only in the 1940
The first Country to Buy Slaves
The Portuguese in the 16th century were the first to buy slave from West Africa slaver and transport them across the Atlantic in 1526 the slaves were transport across the American. There to be sold to work on coffee,tobacco, sugar cotton plantations silver and gold mines e.t.c and some for domestic servants.
The first African kidnapped to the English colonies were classified as indentured servants.
African slavery is categorized into indigenous slavery and export slavery, depending on whether or not slaves were traded beyond the continent.
Slavery history Africa was practiced in many different forms Debt slavery, Enslavement of war, captives military slavery,slavery for prostitution and enslavement of criminals were all practiced in various parts of Africa.
The history of slavery in Gberefu Island (point of no return in Badagry)
The slave journey usually starts from velekete slave market where slave are auctioned.
Slaves are usually people that are kidnapped, captured, prisoner,and spoils of war. They are usually bargained and sold to slave masters who sell them in exchange of guns, jugs, umbrella,mirror,canon, ceramic plates,procelain, wine brass,kettle, gin, alcohol etc.
The journey usually begins from Badagry velekete slave market to the Seriki Barraccon where they are kept till the slave master return to buy moreslave.
Once the slave masters arrived and an agreement has been reached,then they took as both ride across the lagoon of to Gberefu island where they have to walk with heavy chains tied around their neck,waist and legs.
